* IMPORTANT HISTORIC EVENTS TO KNOW *

August 28, 2008
Someone registered the domain name bitcoin.org.

October 31, 2008
Original publication date of the Satoshi Nakamoto Bitcoin Whitepaper:
"Bitcoin: A Peer-toPeer Electronic Cash System"

January 3, 2009
The Bitcoin genesis block was created.  Embedded in this first block was the message: "The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks."

January 12, 2009
The first bitcoin transaction from Satoshi Nakamoto to Hal Finney. Please see this tweet from Andreas Antonopolous: https://twitter.com/aantonop/status/1216406251854278659?s=20

January 2010
Bitcoin Market was launched allowing your average person (with a little difficulty) to purchase Bitcoin.

February 2010
Liberty Reserve (a Liberatarian Radio) tried to put a price on Bitcoin based on hash rate and energy. It was 8/10s of a penny back then before it went on an exchange. (PayPal might have been involved). This causes the prices to soar over the year from $0.008 USD per Bitcoin to $0.50 USD per Bitcoin by the end of the year.

Satoshi Nakamoto also disappeared.

May 22, 2010
Laszlo Hanyecz purchased two Papa John's pizzas with 10,000 Bitcoin. This was organized on the BitcoinTalk forum. (FYI, Laszlo created the first MacOC implementation of Bitcoin Core. He also did the first Lightning network purchase of pizza as well.)

November 7, 2010
Slush Pool launched, originally known as Bitcoin CZ Mining. It was announced under the name Bitcoin Pooled Mining Server, and operated on a share strategy that involved an artificially low difficulty method that has since been determined to be vulnerable to cheating. (FYI, "Slush" started Satoshi Labs, and he also started popular hardware wallet known as Trezor). Slush Pool is one of the strongest pools today and also likely the longest lasting, standing pool in Bitcoin's history.

2011
2011 was the year of Mt. Gox hack where thousands of fake Bitcoins were released on the market, thus devaluing the currency. A large amount of personal data of users was also exposed. On the same day as the Mt. Gox hack, MyBitcoin was also hacked leading to the theft of thousands of Bitcoins. BTC settled around $30 USD a BTC price point during this year.

2011 was also the year of the darkness market, Silk Road and Ross Ulbricht (known as Dread Pirate Roberts). The Silk Road was the original and first dApp (decentralized application). Ross William Ulbricht was convicted of money laundering, computer hacking, conspiracy to traffic fraudulent identity
documents, and conspiracy to traffic narcotics by means of the internet  (according to Wikipedia).

April 26, 2011
The last time anyone ever hears from the person under the name "Satoshi Nakamoto".

June 14, 2011
WikiLeaks also happened. It proved the key use case for Bitcoin and proved that censorship resistance is important. Payment processors and PayPal were told to not do business with WikiLeaks, so WikiLeaks was locked out of the financial system by the government. Key person from this is Julian Assange.

April 24, 2012
Erik Vorhees launches Satoshi Dice, a gambling site on top of the Bitcoin protocol.

June 2012
Coinbase launches as a VC backed, Silicon Valley company with over $800 million in funding.

2012
Charlie Shrem gets arrested as Bitcoin's first felon (before Ross Ulbricht). Charlie ran BitInstant, which was a processor and a conduit for getting money from US users to Mt. Gox at the time.

2013 - 2016
GHash.io was a Bitcoin mining pool. It gained notoriety for controlling (briefly) more than 51% of Bitcoin's computer power in 2014. We're lucky that GHash was not a bad guy - and decided to not attack the network.

July 2014
New York State adopts the notorious BitLicense, under Ben Lawsky.

February 2016
The Hong Kong Agreement after the Bitcoin Roundtable, agree on Segwit all in the name of increase block size.

2017
A huge turning point for Bitcoin. The price in December surged to an all-time high of $19,800 USD per Bitcoin. It was short lived and Bitcoins price crashed afterwards.

August 1, 2017
BitcoinCash fork also happened in 2017.

March 15, 2018
Lightning Labs CEO Elizabeth Stark announced the release of LND 0.4 Beta (The Lightning Network, Bitcoin "Layer 2" network for micropayments).

~May 11, 2020

The third Bitcoin halving will occur on approximately May 11, 2020. The miner reward will get reduced to 6.25 BTC per block. Lots of math can be done around this #halving, but we're looking at approximately 900 BTC per day in supply until the next halving in 2024.

May 22, 2010
Laszlo Hanyecz paid 10,000 (ten thousand) Bitcoins (yes you're reading that number correctly!) for two pizzas delivered from Papa John's.  It might be the most expensive meal in history because the relative cost in dollars keeps going up.

A much more comprehensive history is here.
